Black Female in Popular Film
Over winter break, I viewed the film The Best Man Holiday. In this film I would say that the notion of black female empowerment was definitely prevailing. The film's story centered around Mia (Monica Calhoun), who gets very ill. In the film Mia is a mother, wife and friend. Her illness inevitably brings the family and friends closer together, and grants the family a sense of unity and love. Her role in the film is empowering for black females and the black community in general. It should also be noted that the entire cast was depicted as successful, upper-class citizens.
