Black male representation

This week, all of our aurhors pretty much agreed on three points when it comes to black male representations in film. The three ideas that they agreed on were patriarchy,  heterosexuality,  and masculinity. The most recent film that I saw with black male actors was "The Butler." This movie, in my opinion,  displays multiple representations and ideas. The son Louis does not agree with who his father is because he sees him as weak and an embarrassment for being a servant. He often disobeys and disappoints his parents by participating in the Civil Rights Movement and not attending college. His mother, played by Oprah seems to go against the idea of patriarchy because she is often treated equally important to here husband and he seems to realize her worth beyond just a wife and mother. Louis' dad is not beyond showing his more feminine side as we see him cry and and read to a little girl. Louis is a very masculine character and at one point is aligned with the hyper masculine Black Panther Party, yet I feel as if he goes against the representations of black masculinity when he walks away from the violent ideas of this party and the woman he had long loved. I very much enjoyed the representations in this movie and while some characters fit the usual representations, I felt the main characters were more complex and very interesting when compare to others.
