Black Women
Black Women seem to always play a role that depicts them in overly used stereotypes, such as the "angry black woman, "the whore", "crack head, and "poor struggling single mother" to name a few. There seems to be no fully positive character of a black woman, and what I mean by that is there seems to be a negative associated with every positive role of a black woman. The last film I watched with strong African American female leads was "The Best Man Holiday", which I thought was an excellent film. Even though the whole cast was full of successful black males and females, they all fit into some sort of stereotypical category. There are five leading women in the film, one is labeled as the strong independent, bitter black woman, another used to be a stripper and she's "ghetto", there's "the whore", "the struggling woman", and the woman who lives off of her husband. It seems like black women cant get a role with out it fitting into one of these categories. Reid discusses the hypersexual role that African American women portray in this chapter and this movie definitely shows just that. All of the females in this movie dress provocative, and are some sort of sex symbols to their men.
