Blog 3- "The Family that Preys"

The most recent movie that I watched with a leading black female actress was Tyler Perry's "The Family that Preys." This movie features a few female actresses but two of the roles were really interesting to me. Alfre Woodard (Alice) and Sanaa Lathan (Andrea) play mother and daughter but their two roles contrast a lot. Andrea is Alice's daughter and during the movie she possesses lack of moral character which her mom displays a lot of. Andrea has been having an affair with a married white man even though she too is married and her husband is helping her raise two of her children with this man. She has her job and position because of her affair and shows little guilt about what she is doing. I liked the contrast between her and her mother because Andrea's character was very hard to like but the role of Alice was redeemable because you see her strength and wisdom develop over time. She was a resilient and independent character who stood on her own without a man and earned her own fortune after being abandoned by her husband. While I felt that Andrea's role was more stereotypical, I loved Alice's character for its depth.
