I recently saw Oprah Winfrey's role as a wife  in the film, The Butler. In the movie Oprah displays many of the clichè characteristics and behaviors that Reid discusses in the book. For instance in the movie you will witness Winfrey slap her son in the face, you will see her abuse alcohol, and you will see her speak aggressively and at times talk "slick". That coincides with the book, saying that black women's roles historically portray them to be less feminine than white women. Black women were also sometimes viewed as flirtatious but in the film Winfrey remains loyal and turns down a neighbor who had interest, despite her feeling lonely. Lastly, black women often played roles that showed them providing domestic services and often working hard. Although Winfrey up kept the household, she was a stay at home mom.
